Can Muslim Men Wear Gold?

In Islam, Muslim men are not allowed to do a few things. One of them is wearing gold. So, the most appropriate answer to the question is a Muslim man can not wear gold if he takes his religion seriously. Muslims can wear silver as compared to gold.

Usually, Islam has a legitimate reason to forbid Muslims from something.

It is generally believed whatever is allowed in Islam is beneficial for the human body and whatever is forbidden is harmful. So, if gold is forbidden there must be some legitimate reason as well.

Why Can Muslim Men not Wear Gold?

Muslim men have been banned from wearing gold because they happen to have more white cells in the body as compared to women. The metal ore called “gold” contains rays that pass through the body’s skin and influence the blood cells.

The men and women are made different. Women have a layer of fat between the skin and the flesh whereas men do not have any fat between the skin and flesh. Since they do not have a fat guard to protect their body from the penetration of harmful rays, they should not wear gold.

No other thing can stop gold from altering the number of blood cells in the man’s body, they should rather not wear it.

Islamic References about Gold

Several times in the Quran and Hadith the Muslims are forbidden to wear gold. Here’s how the Muslims are forbidden to wear gold in the Quran and Hadith;

Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the good things of His providing?” (Al-A`raf: 32)

Do not wear silk, for those who wear it in this life shall not wear it in the Hereafter.” (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Once the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) took a piece of silk in his right hand and some gold in his left hand and then addressed Muslims as ” These two are haram for the men of my ummah.” Classed as Saheeh by al-Albani in Sahih Abu Dawud.

The Hadith scholars have also debated on this topic, here are a few proofs;

Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Muslim (14/32):

“With regard to gold rings, they are haram for men according to scholarly consensus. The same applies if they are part gold and part silver.

Our companions said: If the top of the ring is gold or if it is lightly plated with gold, it is haram, because of the general meaning of the hadith concerning silk and gold, “These two are haram for the males of my ummah and halal for the females.”

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“There is nothing wrong with gold plated watches for women, but for men, they are haram, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade gold to the males of his ummah.” (Majmu‘ Fatawa wa Rasail Ibn ‘Uthaymin, 11/62)

The Scholar of the standing committee has issued a Fatwa this way;

“If the watch or its band is made of gold, it is not permissible for men to wear it. If it is not made of gold, then it is permissible for men to wear it.” Fatawa al-Lajnah ad-Daimah, 24/63

So, from the all above evidences it is concluded that Muslim men can not wear gold as they are strictly forbidden to do so.
